Year 2
Weekly Update - Friday 23rd January 2026
A Summary of our Week
We have had a fantastic week of learning, topped off with a wonderful and engaging workshop all about the Great Fire of London. The children were fully immersed in the experience and showed great enthusiasm as they explored life in London in 1666.
Our new Maths Fluency sessions, which take place every morning at 8:45, continue to play a key role in helping children develop a strong understanding of number facts. This week we have been encouraging children to subitise, which means to recognise how many objects there are without counting each one individually.
In Maths, we finished our unit on temperature at the beginning of the week and have moved onto learning about pictograms. We have explored how pictograms can be used to represent and interpret data, using pictures and symbols to show information clearly. The children have also been able to make comparisons using the data and using the vocabulary: most, least, as many as.
In English, the children have enjoyed planning and writing their own Mrs Armitage stories. They have had to think carefully about their characters, settings and the order of events. By using interesting noun phrases and varied time adverbials, the children have been able to add excitement and interest to their writing.
In Science this week, we planned and began an investigation to find out whether plants grow better in the light or in the dark. We discussed what equipment we would need and how to make it a fair test. Working in groups, the children planted cress seeds and place one pot near the window in the daylight and another in a cupboard. We will continue to observe and compare their growth over time.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend and thank you for your continued support!
Our learn next week:
Maths: Next week, we will continue our learning journey based on pictograms.
English: We will start off the week by learning the features of a diary and our model text based on Samual Pepy’s diary. Later in the week we will revisit ‘past’ and ‘present’ tenses and conjunctions.
Reading: Your children will continue to read with an adult in their reading groups. Our whole class reading text will focus on a range of skills, including retrieval, inference, word meanings and prosody.
Foundation:
In History, we will recall the import facts that we learnt in the ‘Great Fire of London’ workshop and write up our own recount.
In Art, we will be using our texture painting to make a collage.
In Computing, we continue our word processing unit by using touch typing.
In PSHE, the children will work in a group to create an end product linked to ‘a garden of dreams and goals.’
In RE, we will explain the ways a Muslim might show respect to Allah in their lives.
In Science, we start our new unit ‘habitats’. We start off by investigation the habitats in our local area and then move on to learn about the polar habitat.
In PE, Coaches will teach every Tuesday and Teachers will teach gymnastics every Thursday.

If a Maths homework sheet is sent home, it will be sent on a Friday, and children can return it on a Monday.

Please read with your child five times a week and write in their reading record.
Notices & Reminders:
Please continue to regularly hear your child read at home.
Even if your child is now reading chapter books with good fluency, regular reading aloud is still essential. It allows you to check that they fully understand what they are reading and gives them the opportunity to develop important comprehension and inference skills.
During reading time, please also keep an eye out for spelling patterns—particularly the use of apostrophes for possession and in contractions (e.g., don’t). Noticing and discussing these features will really support their writing, too.
Thank you for your continued support.
Mrs Hodgson, Mrs Thornton- Brown, Mrs Harding and Mrs Offer.
