Year 2

Weekly Update - Friday 27th March 2026

A Summary of our Week

Dear Parents and Carers,

Wow—the end of the Spring term already! It has been wonderful to see how much progress they have all made over the term, and this final week has been no exception. We ended the week in the best possible way, celebrating with our exciting Crazy Hair Day—there were some wonderfully creative (and very impressive!) hairstyles on display. The Easter egg hunt was also a great success, bringing plenty of smiles and excitement as the children searched high and low.

In Maths this week, the children have been exploring 3D shapes. They have been learning to identify key features and have enjoyed sorting and categorising shapes based on these properties. The children have also been introduced to nets, developing their understanding of how 3D shapes can be constructed from 2D shapes.

In English, the children have continued their work on poetry and have planned and written their own Spring-themed poems. They have worked hard to think of vivid images associated with Spring and have practised using rhyme thoughtfully and effectively within their writing.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. Wishing you all a very Happy Easter break—we hope you enjoy a restful and joyful holiday with your families.

Our learning after half term:

Maths: We will continue exploring 3D shapes, with a particular focus on recognising them within repeated patterns and identifying any missing shapes. Later in the week, we will begin our work on fractions, introducing the concept of equal parts of a whole and exploring what 1/2 and 1/4 represent.

English: We will begin our new unit on traditional stories. The children will start by exploring the key features of traditional tales before being introduced to the story of The Elves and the Shoemaker. We are looking forward to using this text to inspire their reading and writing over the coming weeks.

Reading: The children will continue to read regularly with an adult in their guided reading groups. Our whole-class reading sessions will focus on developing a range of essential skills, such as retrieval, inference, understanding word meanings in context, and building prosody—the ability to read with fluency and expression.

Foundation Subjects

  • Science: The children will be observing and comparing bulbs and seeds. They will explore the variety of shapes and sizes they come in and develop a deeper understanding of their differences and characteristics.
  • History: We will be beginning our new unit of work on inventors and inventions. In our first lesson, the children will learn about Alexander Graham Bell, exploring what he invented and understanding why his work was so important.
  • Computing: The children will be starting their new unit on Stop Motion. They will learn what animation is and begin to understand the key elements of a simple animation.
  • Art: In our new unit on exploring clay, the children will begin by learning how to use their hands as tools to shape and manipulate the clay. This will help them develop their control and confidence when working with this new material.
  • PSHE: The children will be learning about families and relationships. They will explore the different members of their own family, understand their relationships with each of them, and discuss why sharing and cooperating with family members is important. The children will also learn to appreciate that everyone’s family is different and understand that, for most people, family is something very valuable.
  • RE: The children will revisit their learning about Islam this week and explore why Muhammad was chosen to be a prophet. They will deepen their understanding of his role and significance within the faith.
  • PE: Swimming and PE coaches.
